I haven’t ranted in a long while but this just pisses me off. I just downloaded SONY’s big answer to all of our prayers, aka firmware 2.40 and boy was I in for a big surprise. They promised us in game XMB with access to all features, but did they deliver? This answer is a big fat NO! Sure you can access the XMB in-game but what can you do with it-absolutely nothing. To do anything means quiting the game. You can’t even listen to your own fucking music. In one of those “tutorial videos” on SONY’s official blog they said custom soundtracks, but when you try to do so, this is what you get:

“MUSIC CANNOT BE PLAYED DURING USE OF THIS GAME”
When I first saw this error message I though maybe it is just this game, but no you still cannot play music that is stored on your HD while in ANY game. Also the XMB slows down to a speed of a 90 year old granny when the game you are running is on a blu ray. Anyway it’s late, I am tired and upset and I am off to get some sleep. Maybe when I wake up this would all be a terrible dream.
But HOORAY, at least we got a clock on the home page now!!!
[UPDATE 1]
Here is the video where they promised us in-game music(skip to 3:30):
[UPDATE 2]
For those who are interested, the XMB doesn’t even work with PS1 or PS2 games, it is simply not accessible. Another smart move by SONY.

I’ve tried out the xmb in-game and have had no problems with the speed of things, just played around while in MGS4, have not tried the music, but watching the video it seems that at the moment there are a limited amount of games that can use the Music on HD feature, are you sure you tried all the games you own, maybe the games are going to get updates aswell…

It’ looks like the game manufacturers will need to upload patches for this feature to work. And some of the upcoming games may have to be patched as well because they probably don’t want to push release dates back. But all the stuff down the road should come ready to go. Now the question is how long before it becomes a priority with manufacturers to build this patch for games they have already moved on from? It may take awhile.

al, I have tried all the games even Pixel Junk Monsters and it did not work. This is the question. Wouldn’t you want to listen to your own music while playing an old PS2 game like MGS2 or MGS3? How are they going to patch those games up? I just don’t get it. SONY crowned PS3 as this super computer but since it’s release they still can’t give us this feature.

You need to learn to rant, or at least learn to listen correctly.
Direct quote: “Another thing the 2.40 update LAYS THE GROUNDWORK FOR is the ability to play your own music stored on your HDD in-game.”
He says specifically that the functionality isn’t quite available yet.

Yes I know that, but the way he said it was very low key. Now if he would have said “that in order to use this feature developers must patch up the game” I would not have had a problem with the update, but he didn’t do that. Another thing that pisses me off is that the in-game XMB doesn’t work with PS1 and PS2 games. He didn’t mention that either.
